acan-lord-1
Acan Lord

The Acan Lord is one of the classic large polyp stony corals in the reef aquarium hobby, known for its fleshy, circular polyps and diverse colour combinations. Originally from Australia, Micromussa lordhowensis has been a long-standing favourite for adding a splash of texture and colour to the lower sections of a reef tank. They grow by budding new polyps around the colony's edge, gradually forming a dense mat over the rockwork.

In a home aquarium, Acan Lords display round, puffy polyps that can inflate substantially, especially during feeding. At the centre of each polyp is a distinct mouth. The colouration of this species is famously variable, often featuring a base colour of red, green, or brown, frequently with contrasting stripes or mottled patterns in shades of grey, orange, or even purple. The polyps extend their tentacles at night, but they will often show a dramatic feeding response if food is introduced to the tank during the day.

For care, Acan Lords prefer lower light levels, somewhere in the 50-150 PAR range. They do best placed on the sandbed or on a low-lying rock structure, out of direct, high-intensity light. Water flow should be gentle to moderate, just enough to keep the polyps free of detritus but not so strong that it causes them to retract. Like most LPS corals, they appreciate stable water parameters: calcium around 420-440 ppm, alkalinity at 8-9 dKH, and magnesium between 1300-1400. While photosynthetic, they benefit from direct feeding once or twice a week with meaty foods like mysis or pellet food. They are considered moderately aggressive; it's best to give them at least a few inches of space from their neighbours to avoid any nighttime battles.

An Acan Lord colony is a great choice for a mixed reef, as its care needs are quite straightforward. They coexist well with most other reef inhabitants, provided they are given enough personal space. Their slower growth rate and contained colony formation make them a predictable and rewarding addition for the long term.

This is a WYSIWYG item, so you'll receive the exact specimen pictured.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1849/1739/files/13973c0a-c82b-4ece-b2f6-c263b6d7bd64-_MG_4729.png?v=1788466950
