fijian-ornate-wrasse
Fijian Ornate Wrasse

The Ornate Wrasse is a spectacular and constantly active reef fish, displaying an intricate mixture of red, green, blue and turquoise markings that become increasingly impressive as the fish matures. Juveniles and females can be identified by the two distinctive eyespots along the dorsal fin, while mature males develop stronger colouration and a slightly different pattern. Reaching up to approximately 18 centimetres, this is a fantastic feature fish for a well-established marine aquarium.

We recommend an established aquarium of at least 300 litres with plenty of open swimming room, mature rockwork and a soft sand bed approximately 5 centimetres deep. Like other members of the Halichoeres genus, the Ornate Wrasse buries itself beneath the sand to sleep and may also disappear into the substrate when frightened or first introduced. Coarse or sharp substrates should be avoided, and the aquarium must have a secure lid or mesh cover because wrasses are exceptionally capable jumpers.

The Ornate Wrasse is generally peaceful with unrelated fish but may become territorial towards similar wrasses, particularly once mature. It is usually safe with corals, making it suitable for many reef aquariums, but it should not be considered completely safe with ornamental invertebrates. Small shrimp, snails, feather dusters, tiny hermit crabs and other mobile invertebrates may be investigated or eaten as the fish naturally searches through the rockwork and sand for small crustaceans and molluscs.

A varied, protein-rich diet should be offered several times throughout the day. Suitable foods currently available from EasternMarine include Fauna Marin Soft Multi Mix, Fauna Marin Soft Protein Super Food and Frozen Nutrition Brine/Artemia Shrimp. EMA Marine Mega Mix Fish & Coral Food can also provide valuable dietary variety, while Fauna Marin Soft Protect is an excellent option for supporting newly introduced fish during periods of transport or environmental stress. Feeding smaller portions two or three times daily will help maintain strong colour, body condition and consistent activity.

Maintain a temperature of approximately 24–26°C, a salinity of 1.024–1.026 and a pH between 8.1 and 8.4. The Ornate Wrasse is best suited to an intermediate marine aquarist who can provide stable water conditions, a suitable sand bed and carefully selected tank mates. Newly introduced specimens may remain buried for several days while adjusting to their surroundings, which is usually normal provided the aquarium is secure and water conditions remain stable.
