orange-small-dome-fungia
Orange Small Dome Fungia

Fungia corals, often called plate corals, are a fascinating and popular choice for reef aquarists. Unlike most stony corals that form branching or encrusting colonies, the Fungia is a solitary, free-living coral. This means it can move itself around the bottom of the aquarium, making it a uniquely interactive and engaging species to keep. Its hardiness and interesting behaviors make it a great choice for both new and experienced hobbyists.

This species typically forms a single, circular, or dome-shaped polyp with a central mouth. Radiating from the center are prominent skeletal ridges, or septa, which are covered by a fleshy polyp tissue. The coloration is a solid, deep orange that adds a vibrant splash of color to the sandbed. At night, they may extend small tentacles from their surface for feeding. Over time, Fungia corals can grow quite large, developing into a very impressive centerpiece specimen.

For care, Fungia corals are quite straightforward. They prefer to be placed directly on the sandbed where they have room to expand and move. Lighting should be in the low to moderate range, approximately 75-150 PAR. Water flow should also be low to moderate and indirect, as strong, direct flow can flip the coral over or irritate its tissue. Fungia are capable feeders and will benefit from regular target feeding of meaty foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or specialized LPS pellets. Maintain stable water parameters with calcium between 400-450 ppm, alkalinity at 8-12 dKH, and magnesium from 1300-1450 ppm. While not overly aggressive, they should be given several inches of space from other corals as they can inflate their tissue and have short sweeper tentacles.

The Fungia coral is a worthwhile addition for its bold coloration and distinct character. Its ability to live unattached to the rockwork brings a different kind of life and interest to the lower levels of a reef tank, making it a standout animal in any collection.

Please note: This is not a WYSIWYG item. You will receive a coral frag of the same species and similar coloration/quality to what is photographed, but the exact specimen may vary. Each piece is unique and hand-selected for health and color.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1849/1739/files/43b8e932-640d-4359-b013-84b910d31a91-_MG_3842.png?v=1779996843
