purple-trachyphyllia
Purple Trachyphyllia

Trachyphyllia, often called an Open Brain Coral, is a popular choice for enthusiasts of Large Polyp Stony corals. These are solitary corals, meaning the entire structure is a single animal. Their appeal comes from their impressive ability to inflate their fleshy tissue, their often vibrant coloration, and their relatively straightforward care requirements, making them a unique centerpiece for the lower levels of a reef aquarium.

This species typically presents a folded, figure-eight shape, though it can also be more circular. The fleshy mantle can expand to a surprising size, often completely obscuring the underlying skeleton. While they come in a range of colors, this variety exhibits a rich purple hue, which can vary in intensity. The surface of the coral has deep valleys and folds, adding texture and depth to its appearance. At the center of the polyp, a mouth is visible, especially during feeding.

A dedicated paragraph on care is essential for the success of this species. Trachyphyllia prefer low to moderate lighting, somewhere in the 75 to 150 PAR range, as intense light can cause the coral to bleach. Water flow should also be low to moderate and preferably indirect; strong, direct flow can damage the delicate tissue and prevent full expansion. Ideal placement is on the sandbed, which mimics its natural habitat. It is photosynthetic but benefits greatly from direct feeding of meaty foods like mysis or brine shrimp 1-2 times per week. Maintain stable water parameters with Calcium between 400-450 ppm, Alkalinity at 8-12 dKH, and Magnesium between 1250-1350 ppm. While generally peaceful, they can extend sweeper tentacles at night, so provide at least a few inches of space from neighboring corals. Acclimate slowly using a drip method to avoid shock.

The Open Brain Coral is a rewarding species for both new and experienced hobbyists. Its dynamic nature, changing from a compact shape to a large, inflated polyp, provides constant interest. It brings a substantial presence and a splash of deep color to the sandbed area of a well-maintained reef tank.

Please note: This is not a WYSIWYG item. You will receive a coral frag of the same species and similar coloration/quality to what is photographed, but the exact specimen may vary. Each piece is unique and hand-selected for health and color.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1849/1739/files/7c683ea6-0a73-4a8c-ba08-161641d35a60-_MG_3843.png?v=1779996750
