red-and-blue-war-coral-frag
Red and Blue War Coral Frag

The War Coral, a member of the Favites genus, is a popular large polyp stony (LPS) coral known for its distinctive, brain-like appearance and hardy nature. These corals add incredible texture and color to a reef aquarium, with each colony developing a unique pattern of ridges and valleys. Their active feeding response at night also provides an interesting behavior for hobbyists to observe.

Favites corals typically grow in an encrusting or massive boulder-like form, creating a bumpy, textured surface. The individual polyps are housed in angular corallites with raised walls, which give the coral its characteristic look. This species commonly displays a combination of deep reds and contrasting blues or greens, with the colors often appearing on the oral disc and the surrounding tissue, creating a striking pattern.

For optimal health, a War Coral should be placed in the lower to middle third of the aquarium where it will receive low to moderate lighting, ideally in the 75-150 PAR range. They prefer moderate, indirect water flow that is strong enough to keep their surface clean but not so intense that it causes tissue damage. Favites are aggressive corals and can extend long sweeper tentacles at night, so it is crucial to provide at least 3-4 inches of space between them and any neighboring corals. They are avid eaters and will benefit from weekly target feeding of meaty foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or specialized LPS pellets. Maintain stable water parameters with calcium between 400-450 ppm, alkalinity at 8-12 dKH, and magnesium around 1250-1350 ppm. Slow drip acclimation is recommended to help the coral adjust to your tank's conditions.

With its rugged appearance and bold coloration, the War Coral is a rewarding species for hobbyists prepared to meet its needs. Its interesting surface topography and active feeding behavior make it a compelling addition to a well-maintained LPS or mixed reef system.

Please note: This is not a WYSIWYG item. You will receive a coral frag of the same species and similar coloration/quality to what is photographed, but the exact specimen may vary. Each piece is unique and hand-selected for health and color.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1849/1739/files/render-8633c99d-93bb-4ddc-8137-196da41116d6.png?v=1773964426
