teal-eye-favia-fragment
Teal Eye Favia Fragment

Favia corals, often included in the group of corals referred to as brain corals, are a popular choice among reef aquarium hobbyists for their durability and engaging appearance. They are a hardy large polyp stony (LPS) coral that can be a great starting point for aquarists looking to keep more demanding stony corals, offering a classic reef aesthetic.

This coral typically grows in an encrusting or massive form, gradually covering rockwork with its distinct, interconnected corallites. The surface resembles a honeycomb pattern, with each polyp having its own center, or 'eye'. Favia coloration is diverse, commonly displaying shades of green, brown, and red, often with brightly contrasting oral discs that can appear to glow under actinic lighting.

Care for Favia is straightforward, making it a suitable choice for reefers with some experience keeping LPS corals. It prefers low to moderate lighting conditions, ideally in the 75-150 PAR range. Water flow should be moderate and indirect; avoid placing it in a direct, high-flow stream which can prevent it from extending its polyps. Ideal placement is on the sandbed or lower to middle sections of the rockwork. Favia corals are capable feeders and will extend feeding tentacles at night. Target feeding small, meaty foods such as mysis, brine shrimp, or LPS-specific pellets a couple of times per week will promote good health and growth. Maintain stable water parameters, with calcium between 400-450 ppm, alkalinity at 8-12 dKH, and magnesium between 1250-1350 ppm. Be aware that Favia can be aggressive; they are known to extend sweeper tentacles at night, so provide at least 3-4 inches of space from neighboring corals. Standard drip acclimation is recommended for a smooth transition into your aquarium.

With its interesting texture and active feeding response, a Favia coral is a worthwhile and rewarding addition to a mixed reef tank, bringing a classic stony coral look without the demanding care of some other species.

This is a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) item. The coral you will receive is the exact specimen shown in the product photo, not a representative frag.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1849/1739/files/e836c9a5-5626-40f1-a415-4f06b318f888-_MG_3806.png?v=1779999927
