war-coral-favites-coral
War Coral Favites Coral

Favites corals, sometimes known as pineapple or moon corals, are a classic large-polyp stony (LPS) coral in the reef aquarium hobby. They belong to a large and diverse group of brain corals found throughout the Indo-Pacific. The War Coral is a specific variety noted for its particularly striking colour combination, making it a long-standing favourite for adding a splash of intensity to a reef.

This coral grows in an encrusting or massive form, gradually covering the rockwork and forming a lumpy, boulder-like colony. The individual polyps, or corallites, share common walls, creating a distinctive honeycomb pattern across the surface. While its polyps are mostly retracted during the day, it has a good feeding response and can extend surprisingly long sweeper tentacles at night. Its colouration is typically a deep green base with vibrant splashes of red or orange across the corallite walls, creating the high-contrast look it's known for.

For care, War Corals are relatively hardy but do have specific needs. They thrive in moderate lighting conditions, so a PAR range of 100-200 is a good target. Water flow should be moderate and indirect, enough to keep the surface clear of detritus without blasting the tissue. Placement is best on the rockwork in the lower to middle sections of the tank. Like most LPS, stable water parameters are key: calcium at 420-440 ppm, alkalinity at 8-9 dKH, and magnesium between 1300-1400. It's important to leave several inches of space between a Favites and any neighbouring corals, as it is aggressive and will use its sweeper tentacles to defend its territory.

In a mature reef, a War Coral becomes a permanent feature, slowly claiming its territory on the rockscape. Its encrusting nature is perfect for covering bare spots or creating a focal point of colour and texture. It is a rewarding species for aquarists who can provide stable conditions and respect its territorial nature.

This is a WYSIWYG item, so you'll receive the exact specimen pictured.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1849/1739/files/26095be3-4a51-4e08-ad65-1347768f74e3-26-_MG_4374.png?v=1783712151
