The Sleeper Striped Goby (Valenciennea strigata), also known as the Golden-Headed Sleeper Goby, is a hardworking sand-sifter with a distinctive golden-yellow head and long, slender body marked with horizontal blue lines. Peaceful and reef safe, this goby is highly valued for its natural ability to aerate the sand bed and control detritus by continuously sifting sand through its gills. Its constant activity and striking coloration make it both a functional and attractive addition to medium to large reef aquariums.
To keep them healthy, provide an aquarium of at least 200 liters with a fine sandy substrate, as this species relies heavily on sand-sifting behavior for both feeding and comfort. A secure aquascape with caves or overhangs will help reduce stress and provide resting areas. Their diet should include frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and sinking pellets, especially in tanks without an established microfauna population.
Sleeper Striped Gobies are generally peaceful but may quarrel with conspecifics unless kept as a bonded pair. With proper care, stable water conditions, and access to sandy substrate, this species can thrive while keeping the aquarium floor clean and oxygenated. Its utility combined with its gentle temperament makes it a favorite among reef keepers looking for both beauty and practicality.
