The Saddleback Butterflyfish (Chaetodon ephippium) is a striking and graceful species known for its dramatic black “saddle” marking across its back, set against bright yellow fins and silvery body. Native to the Indo-Pacific region, this fish brings both movement and color to marine aquariums. With its flowing fins and peaceful temperament, it makes a captivating centerpiece in a well-maintained reef or fish-only system. Its distinct appearance and elegant swimming behavior make it a favorite among experienced aquarists seeking a touch of the tropics in their tanks.
This species thrives in a tank of at least 400 liters to allow ample space for swimming and exploration. The aquarium should feature plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots, as the Saddleback Butterflyfish enjoys foraging for natural growths and small invertebrates. Water parameters should be stable, with a temperature between 24–27 °C, pH 8.1–8.4, and salinity around 35 ppt (1.025 specific gravity). High water quality and moderate to strong water flow are essential to replicate its natural reef environment.
In terms of diet, the Saddleback Butterflyfish is an omnivore with a preference for meaty and algae-based foods. Offer a varied diet of frozen mysis shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and enriched brine shrimp, supplemented with marine algae or seaweed sheets. Over time, some individuals may learn to accept high-quality pellets or flakes. Feeding small amounts two to three times daily encourages activity and maintains coloration and health. Consistent, diverse feeding helps support immune function and minimizes aggression or coral nipping tendencies.
While generally peaceful, this butterflyfish can be territorial toward similar-looking species. It’s best kept singly or as a bonded pair, alongside other calm community fish. In reef setups, caution is advised—Saddleback Butterflyfish may nip at soft corals or polyps, particularly if underfed. Ideal tankmates include tangs, wrasses, and other non-aggressive fish of similar size. With proper care, stable water conditions, and a nutrient-rich diet, the Saddleback Butterflyfish can live for up to 10 years, becoming a resilient and dazzling highlight in any marine aquarium.
