Green Goniastrea

Goniastrea is a familiar large polyp stony (LPS) coral, often grouped with the so-called ‘brain’ corals. It’s a hardy and predictable grower that has been a reef aquarium staple for many years. This particular specimen has a striking solid green colouration across the entire colony, making it a standout piece on the rockwork.

In the wild, Goniastrea forms large, encrusting colonies or thick plates. In a home reef, it will steadily encrust over the rockwork it is placed on, tracing the contours of the aquascape. The surface is made of angular, fused corallites that create a distinctive maze-like texture. Polyps typically remain short, giving the coral a velvety appearance, and may extend further at night or when it detects food in the water column.

For care, Goniastrea prefers moderate lighting levels, somewhere in the 100 to 200 PAR range. It should be placed on a solid piece of rockwork in the lower to mid-section of the tank. Water flow should be moderate and indirect, enough to keep the surface clean of detritus without blasting the tissue directly. It is photosynthetic but benefits greatly from regular target feeding of small, meaty foods like frozen mysis or dedicated LPS pellets. Goniastrea is armed with short sweeper tentacles, so it's important to provide a few inches of space between it and any neighbouring corals. Standard reef parameters are best, with Calcium at 420-440 ppm, Alkalinity at 8-9 dKH, and Magnesium around 1300-1400 ppm.

As a slower-growing encrusting coral, a Green Goniastrea is an excellent addition for adding a block of solid colour and texture to a mixed reef. Its needs are straightforward for an LPS, making it a satisfying coral to keep long-term in a stable system.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
