Lobo Brain

The Lobo Brain, often Lobophyllia hemprichii, is a familiar and rewarding large-polyp stony coral. It has been a staple in the reef hobby for years, known for its large, fleshy polyps and straightforward care. This species is an excellent choice for adding a bold splash of colour and texture to the lower sections of a reef tank.

Lobo Brains form mounding colonies composed of individual round or irregular polyps. By day, these polyps inflate with water, taking on a full, puffy appearance that hides their underlying skeleton. In the wild, they come in a wide spectrum of colours, commonly seen in deep reds, greens, oranges, and browns, sometimes with brightly contrasting colours around the mouth. At night, the polyps may retract, revealing their large central mouths and occasionally extending short sweeper tentacles.

For best results, place your Lobo Brain on the sandbed or a low, flat rock where it receives low to moderate indirect water flow. Too much direct flow will cause the polyps to stay retracted. Lighting should also be in the low to moderate range, typically between 75-150 PAR. It is a photosynthetic coral but will show its best health and growth with supplemental feeding. Target feed each polyp once or twice a week with small meaty foods like mysis or enriched brine shrimp. Maintain stable reef parameters with calcium around 420-440 ppm, alkalinity at 8-9 dKH, and magnesium at 1300-1400 ppm. While not overly aggressive, it's wise to give it a few inches of space to prevent any issues with neighbouring corals.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
