Purple Chalice

Chalice corals are a diverse group of large polyp stony corals, known for their encrusting or plating growth forms. They have become a staple in the reef aquarium hobby for their unique textures and wide range of colours. This particular specimen exhibits a deep purple base colouration, a classic look for this type of coral.

In a home reef, a Chalice coral will typically encrust over the rockwork it is placed on, gradually forming a thin plate that follows the contours of the aquascape. Growth radiates outwards from the coral's "eyes" or corallites. At night, it may extend short feeder tentacles from these mouths to capture food from the water column.

For best results, place your Purple Chalice in a lower to middle section of the aquarium where it will receive low to moderate lighting, around 75 to 150 PAR. They do not appreciate intense, direct light. Water flow should also be low to moderate and indirect. While photosynthetic, they benefit from occasional target feeding with small meaty foods. Be sure to provide ample space, as chalices are aggressive and can extend sweeper tentacles at night, damaging nearby corals. Maintain stable water parameters with calcium around 400-450 ppm, alkalinity at 8-12 dKH, and magnesium between 1300-1400 ppm.

The unique growth form of a Chalice makes it an interesting addition for filling in lower light areas of the reef. They can create shelves and ledges over time, adding a different dimension to an aquascape dominated by branching or boulder-shaped corals. Just be sure to plan ahead and give it a wide berth from its neighbours.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
