WYSIWYG Purple Trachyphyllia

This beautiful Purple Trachyphyllia is a stunning addition to any reef aquarium. Its vibrant purple coloration is highlighted by intricate patterns that add depth and visual interest. Often called a "Trachy" or "Open Brain" coral, this specimen exhibits a robust and healthy appearance, indicative of careful husbandry.

Trachyphyllia corals thrive under moderate PAR levels, typically between 75-150. Too much light can cause bleaching, while too little can lead to dull coloration and inhibited growth. Moderate, indirect flow is ideal, allowing the coral to expand fully and shed detritus without being constantly battered. Placement on a sandy substrate or a low-lying rock ledge is recommended, ensuring it has ample space to grow without touching other corals, as it can be aggressive.

Feeding is beneficial for Trachyphyllia corals, contributing to faster growth and enhanced coloration. Offer meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or specialized coral foods a few times a week, ideally when the polyps are extended. Maintain stable water parameters: alkalinity 8-12 dKH, calcium 400-450 ppm, and magnesium 1250-1350 ppm. Salinity should be maintained at 1.025-1.026. Keep nitrates low (below 10 ppm) and phosphates near zero.

When introducing your Trachyphyllia, use a drip acclimation method over at least 30-60 minutes to minimize stress from changes in water chemistry. Observe the coral closely for the first few days. Trachyphyllia are known to extend sweeper tentacles at night, so ensure adequate spacing from other corals to prevent stinging. While generally peaceful during the day, their nocturnal aggression warrants careful placement.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
