Description

The Candycane Coral, from the genus Caulastrea, is a long-standing favourite in the reef hobby. It's a branching LPS (Large Polyp Stony) coral that offers a unique structure compared to many other corals. Its forgiving nature makes it a great starting point for those new to keeping stony corals, while its steady growth is appreciated by seasoned hobbyists. This species typically presents in shades of green, teal, or brown, with the oral disc sometimes showing a contrasting colour.

The common name comes from the striped pattern on the exposed skeleton just below the polyp heads, which resembles a candy cane. Each branch of the skeleton is topped with a fleshy polyp that swells nicely during the day. As the colony grows, new heads develop and branch out, gradually forming a dense cluster. At night or when they sense food, these corals will extend short, translucent tentacles to capture particles from the water column.

For care, Candycane Corals are quite adaptable. They thrive in low to moderate light conditions, typically in a PAR range of 75-150. Placement in the lower to middle section of the aquarium, or even on the sandbed, is usually best. Water flow should be low to moderate and indirect, enough to prevent detritus from settling but not so strong that the polyps can't fully expand. They are photosynthetic but will show much better growth with direct feeding once or twice a week. Target feeding with mysis, brine shrimp, or quality LPS pellets is very effective. Like all stony corals, they require stable alkalinity (8-9 dKH), calcium (420-440 ppm), and magnesium (1300-1400 ppm). Although not overly aggressive, it's wise to give them a bit of room from their neighbours.

In a mixed reef, a Candycane Coral colony can add texture and depth to the aquascape. Its predictable growth pattern and peaceful disposition make it a reliable choice that won't cause trouble down the line. It does well in established tanks with community reef fish that are known not to nip at coral polyps.

Our Quarantine Procedures

We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.

As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.

Payment & Security

We offer a number of different payment methods, including Credit Card, Afterpay, Q Card, Pay at Collection, Bank Transfer and POLi.

Credit card payments are processed securely using the highest possible security protocols.
