Description

Lobophyllia corals, often just called "lobos", are a classic large-polyp stony (LPS) coral. They are a familiar sight in reef aquariums, known for their large, fleshy lobes and deep colouration. This particular specimen shows the rich red tones that make the species so popular.

The structure of a Lobophyllia is a series of fleshy, inflated polyps covering a hard skeleton. These polyps can expand and contract significantly depending on light, flow, and feeding. During the day, under appropriate lighting, they will swell up, displaying their full colour. At night, or when feeding, you may see short tentacles emerge from the centre of each polyp. Its deep red colouration provides a solid point of interest in any reef.

For best results, place your Red Lobophyllia on the sandbed or a low-lying rock structure. They prefer low to moderate lighting, somewhere in the 75-150 PAR range, as intense light can cause the colour to fade or the tissue to bleach. Water flow should also be low to moderate and indirect, enough to keep the surface clean without battering the polyps. While photosynthetic, they are active eaters and will benefit from weekly feedings of meaty foods like mysis shrimp or chopped prawn. Keep standard water parameters stable, with calcium around 420-440 ppm and alkalinity between 8-9 dKH. Be sure to give it space, as it can extend sweeper tentacles at night.

Lobophyllia are generally slow-growing corals, making them a predictable addition to a reef tank. Their preference for lower light and flow allows them to occupy areas of the tank where other corals might not thrive, adding texture and colour to the sandbed. It is a peaceful coral as long as its neighbors are kept out of reach of its sweeper tentacles.

Our Quarantine Procedures

We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.

As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.

Payment & Security

We offer a number of different payment methods, including Credit Card, Afterpay, Q Card, Pay at Collection, Bank Transfer and POLi.

Credit card payments are processed securely using the highest possible security protocols.
