A Grade Green Glitter Flowerpot Coral

Flowerpot corals, from the Goniopora genus, are a distinctive LPS known for their long, flowing polyps that sway in the current. They add a unique sense of movement to a reef tank that few other corals can replicate. This particular specimen is a classic green variety, a colour commonly seen in this species.

During the day, a healthy Flowerpot Coral extends its numerous polyps, each ending in a ring of small tentacles that surround a central mouth. This gives the coral its characteristic daisy-like appearance. The polyps can extend significantly, creating a large, dynamic presence from a relatively small base. This specimen has green polyps that provide a constant, gentle motion.

For long-term success, Goniopora require specific care. They prefer low to moderate lighting, with PAR levels in the 75-150 range, and should be placed on the sandbed or a low rock structure out of the most intense light. Water flow should be gentle and indirect, enough to keep the polyps moving but not so strong that they fail to extend fully. Consistent feeding is key; they benefit from regular target feeding with amino acids and small particle coral foods. Like other LPS, they need stable water parameters, including calcium around 420-440 ppm, alkalinity at 8-9 dKH, and magnesium between 1300-1400 ppm. It's important to give them plenty of room, as their long polyps can irritate neighbouring corals.

In a stable, well-maintained aquarium with dedicated feeding, a Flowerpot Coral can be a rewarding centrepiece. While historically considered challenging, success has become more common as the understanding of their nutritional needs has grown. They are generally peaceful but need space to accommodate their full extension without encroaching on other corals.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
