A Grade Orange Hammer Coral

Hammer corals, or Euphyllia ancora, are a cornerstone species in the LPS coral hobby. Their distinctive, hammer-shaped tentacles make them easily recognisable and a favourite for many aquarists. This orange variety brings a vibrant pop of colour to a reef tank. They are generally considered moderately challenging to care for, rewarding consistent water parameters with excellent growth and polyp extension.

This coral exhibits a classic branching growth form, with its polyps extending fully to reveal their signature hammer-like tips. The polyps are a rich, striking orange, often with lighter tips that shimmer under appropriate lighting. When happy, their polyps will inflate significantly, swaying gently in the current. This piece measures approximately 10cm, making it a substantial addition to a mature display.

For optimal health, Hammer corals thrive under moderate lighting, typically 75-150 PAR. Flow should be moderate and indirect, ensuring the polyps sway without being battered against the skeleton. Placement can be on the sand bed or securely attached to rockwork in the lower to mid sections of the tank, where they can extend fully without touching other corals. They are photosynthetic but benefit from supplemental feeding of small meaty foods like mysis shrimp or copepods a few times a week. Maintain stable water parameters: Calcium 400-440 ppm, Alkalinity 8-10 dKH, and Magnesium 1300-1400 ppm. Hammer corals can be aggressive due to their long sweeping tentacles, so ensure ample spacing from neighbouring corals. Acclimation should be gradual, particularly to new lighting conditions.

Hammer corals provide excellent movement and an anchor point for tank aesthetics. Their large, flowing polyps add a dynamic element to any reef.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
