Acan Bowerbanki - Toxic Red

Acanthastrea bowerbanki is a popular Large Polyp Stony (LPS) coral appreciated by reef hobbyists for its exceptionally large, puffy polyps and intense coloration. It belongs to a group of corals often referred to as "Acan lords," though it is distinct from its cousin, Acanthastrea lordhowensis. This species adds a unique texture and bold color to the lower regions of a reef aquarium. Its slow growth rate and manageable care needs make it a suitable choice for patient reef keepers with stable tank environments.

This coral is known for its impressive individual polyps that can grow over an inch in diameter. Acanthastrea bowerbanki colonies are typically encrusting or form low, massive shapes. The fleshy tissue is often a solid, deep red color that stands out in any collection. The central mouth, or oral disc, may sometimes present a contrasting color. At night, its feeding tentacles may become visible, highlighting its active predatory nature.

For proper care, Acanthastrea bowerbanki prefers low to moderate lighting conditions, ideally in the 75-150 PAR range. It should be placed on the aquarium sandbed or on a low-lying rock structure, away from intense light. Water flow should be gentle and indirect, as strong currents can prevent the polyps from fully expanding. This coral is an active feeder and benefits greatly from direct feeding. Target feed meaty foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or specialized LPS pellets once or twice a week. Maintain stable water parameters with calcium at 400-450 ppm, alkalinity at 8-12 dKH, and magnesium at 1250-1350 ppm. This species is aggressive and can extend sweeper tentacles several inches at night, so provide ample space between it and other corals. Always use a slow drip acclimation process when introducing it to your aquarium.

With its vibrant red polyps and interesting texture, Acanthastrea bowerbanki makes for a very rewarding addition to a well-maintained reef aquarium. It brings a splash of deep color that contrasts nicely with other corals and is a prize for any LPS coral enthusiast.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
