Brass Monkey Torch Coral

The torch coral, Euphyllia glabrescens, is a classic large polyp stony coral that brings graceful movement to any reef aquarium. Its long, flowing tentacles are iconic in the hobby. The Brass Monkey variant is a specific colour morph noted for its distinct metallic gold to brassy-yellow tentacles, often finished with contrasting tips.

During the day, a healthy torch coral extends its polyps from a branching stony base, creating a display of motion that resembles a sea anemone. The tentacles sway in the current, catching the light and showing off that signature brassy colouration. These polyps retract into its calcified skeleton at night or when disturbed.

For care, place the coral in a spot with moderate light (around 100-150 PAR) and moderate, indirect water flow. The current should be strong enough to make the tentacles sway gently, but not so strong that they are blasted or unable to fully extend. While primarily photosynthetic, it benefits from occasional target feeding with LPS pellets or meaty foods. A key consideration is its aggression; torch corals have long sweeper tentacles that can sting nearby corals, so provide at least 15-20cm of space from its neighbours. Stable water parameters, particularly calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium, are essential.

In a home reef, the torch coral often serves as a focal point. Its constant, fluid movement provides a dynamic element that complements more static corals. It's a great addition for hobbyists looking to add a piece with both unique colour and engaging motion, provided its space and flow requirements are respected.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
