Christmas Favia

Favia corals have been a long-standing favourite in the reef aquarium hobby, and for good reason. These stony corals are known for their distinctive mounded or encrusting shapes, covered in a landscape of individual polyps. The "Christmas" morph is a classic for its festive green and red colouration, making it a familiar sight in reef tanks for decades.

In a home reef, a Christmas Favia will typically encrust over the rockwork or form a bumpy, dome-like colony. At night or when feeding, its sweeper tentacles may extend an inch or two from the base of each polyp, a good reminder to give it some personal space. Its colouration is quite stable, with a deep green base surrounding vibrant red centres that stay true under a wide range of aquarium lighting.

Care for Favia is straightforward, placing it firmly in the beginner-friendly LPS category. It prefers moderate light levels, somewhere in the 75 to 150 PAR range, so mid-tank placement is ideal. Lower light is generally better than scorching it. It requires moderate, indirect water flow to keep the surface clean without blasting the tissue. Feeding isn't essential, but the coral will benefit from occasional spot-feeding with meaty coral foods. Keep water parameters stable with calcium at 420-440 ppm, alkalinity at 8-9 dKH, and magnesium around 1300-1400 ppm. Favia are fairly aggressive, so place them where their sweeper tentacles can't reach neighbouring corals.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
