Description
The Maxima Clam, Tridacna maxima, is a classic reef aquarium invertebrate known for its brilliant coloration and intricate mantle patterns. These clams are a welcome addition to established reef tanks, offering a unique visual element that stands out among corals. They are active filter feeders that interact with their environment in a way that many sessile invertebrates do not, extending and retracting their mantle in response to light and water conditions.
Maxima clams display a stunning range of colors and patterns, and this variety is entirely natural. Their mantles can be adorned with stripes, spots, and mottled patterns in shades of gold, blue, green, and black. The shell itself features moderately-spaced scutes and has a slightly elongated shape. Maxima clams use byssal threads to firmly anchor themselves to a secure surface, so they should be placed on a stable piece of rockwork in the aquarium.
Proper care is essential for the long-term health of a Maxima Clam. They are photosynthetic and require high lighting conditions, typically in the 250-500 PAR range, to thrive. Water flow should be low to moderate and indirect, as strong, direct currents can cause the mantle to retract. Place the clam on a flat, stable rock surface in the upper half of the tank where it can receive adequate light. While they primarily derive nutrition from their symbiotic zooxanthellae, smaller clams may benefit from occasional phytoplankton feedings. Maintain stable water parameters with calcium between 420-440 ppm, alkalinity at 8-9 dKH, and magnesium between 1300-1400 ppm. Watch for pests like pyramidellid snails and be mindful of tankmates that may nip at the clam's mantle.
For the dedicated reef keeper with an established system, the Maxima Clam is a rewarding invertebrate to keep. It serves as a beautiful centerpiece and a functional part of the reef ecosystem, contributing to water clarity through filter feeding. Its demanding care requirements are well worth the effort for the vibrant life it brings to the aquarium.
This is a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) item. You will receive the exact Gold Maxima Clam shown in the product photograph. Please be sure to acclimate it carefully to both water and lighting upon arrival.
Our Quarantine Procedures
Our Quarantine Procedures
We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.
As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.
Fish
All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.
Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.
During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.
Coral
Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.
Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.
If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed
If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
Payment & Security
We offer a number of different payment methods, including Credit Card, Afterpay, Q Card, Pay at Collection, Bank Transfer and POLi.
Credit card payments are processed securely using the highest possible security protocols.
