Description
The Candy Cane Coral, Caulastrea furcata, is a classic large polyp stony coral that has been a mainstay in the hobby for many years. It is known for being one of the more robust and faster-growing LPS species, making it an excellent choice for those looking to add a branching coral to their reef. This variety features polyps with a pleasant green oral disc.
Caulastrea grows in a branching formation, with new heads budding off from the skeleton over time. This growth form eventually creates a dense, clustered colony. During the day, the coral displays its fleshy, circular polyps. At night, it will often extend short feeder tentacles from the center of each polyp to capture food from the water column, which is a good indicator of the coral's health and happiness.
For best care, the Green Candy Cane Coral should be placed in an area of low to moderate water flow and moderate lighting, with a PAR level between 75 and 150 being a good target. It can be placed on the sand bed or on a lower section of the rockwork. While it gains much of its energy from its symbiotic zooxanthellae, it benefits greatly from regular target feeding of meaty foods like mysis, brine shrimp, or specialized LPS pellets. Stable water parameters are important, with calcium at 420-440 ppm, alkalinity at 8-9 dKH, and magnesium between 1300-1400 ppm. peaceful species with no sweeper tentacles, but it's wise to give it some space to grow into.
The branching growth of a Caulastrea colony provides an interesting structure within a reef tank, contrasting nicely with encrusting, plating, or single-polyp corals. As it develops, the spaces between the branches can also become a safe haven for beneficial microfauna like copepods and tiny brittle stars.

Our Quarantine Procedures
Our Quarantine Procedures
We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.
As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.
Fish
All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.
Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.
During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.
Coral
Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.
Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.
If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed
If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
