Description
The Finger Leather Coral is one of the classic soft corals in the reef aquarium hobby. This particular variety holds a consistent soft green colour, adding a different texture and form to the aquascape. These corals, often from the Sinularia genus, are known for their resilience and steady growth, making them a popular choice for both new and experienced reef keepers.
As the name suggests, this coral grows in an upright, branching structure with finger-like stalks. Its surface is covered in small polyps that extend to feed, giving it a fuzzy appearance. From time to time, you might notice the coral retract its polyps and develop a waxy sheen. normal process where the coral sheds its outer layer to remove algae and detritus, usually lasting a few days before it re-emerges.
For best health, a Finger Leather Coral appreciates moderate lighting, somewhere in the 100-250 PAR range, and moderate to strong water flow. The current helps to prevent detritus from settling on its surface and aids in the shedding process. Place it in the middle to upper regions of the tank with plenty of room to grow, as it can get quite large over time. While primarily photosynthetic, it may benefit from occasional broadcast feeding. Like all corals, it requires stable alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium levels, but it's generally more forgiving than stony corals.
Finger Leathers are peaceful and lack stinging tentacles, but they can release soft coral terpenes into the water, so running activated carbon is a good practice. They make a great addition to a mixed reef, providing height and gentle swaying motion that contrasts well with stony corals and other sessile invertebrates. Because they don't pose a sting risk, the main consideration for placement is giving them enough space so they don't overshadow slower-growing neighbours.
This is not a WYSIWYG listing; you'll receive a specimen of the same species with similar size and colouration to the one pictured, hand-picked for health and colour.
Our Quarantine Procedures
Our Quarantine Procedures
We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.
As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.
Fish
All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.
Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.
During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.
Coral
Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.
Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.
If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed
If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
