Green Fungia Plate Coral

Fungia plate corals are a classic large polyp stony (LPS) coral, known for their solitary, free-living nature. Unlike most corals that grow in colonies, a Fungia is a single large polyp with a hard, disc-shaped skeleton. They are a common sight in the hobby and for good reason, offering a unique structure and straightforward care. This particular specimen has a vibrant green colouration that holds well under a wide range of aquarium lighting.

In the wild, these corals are often found on soft seabeds or in rubble zones. In a home reef, their behaviour is just as interesting. They can inflate their tissues with water, making them appear quite fleshy and full. While generally stationary, a Fungia plate is capable of limited movement, especially if it flips over. It will slowly inflate and deflate its tissue to right itself over a day or two. The tentacles are short and typically extended at night for feeding.

Caring for a Fungia is relatively simple, making it a good choice for those new to LPS corals. They should be placed flat on the sandbed, away from direct, high-blast flow. Moderate, indirect water movement is best. Lighting requirements are also moderate; a PAR range of 75-150 is a safe target. Avoid placing it on the rockwork, as a fall could damage its tissue. They feed readily on meaty foods like mysis or pellet foods, which can be gently placed onto the mouth in the centre of the disc once or twice a week. Maintain stable water parameters, with calcium around 420-440 ppm, alkalinity at 8-9 dKH, and magnesium at 1300-1400.

A green plate coral adds a great point of interest to the lower levels of a reef tank. Because it is a solitary, semi-mobile coral, it's important to give it plenty of personal space. Keep it away from aggressive neighbours that could sting it and from small ornamental shrimp that might be tempted to pick at its fleshy tissue. Once settled, they are very hardy and can live for many years.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
