Green Goniopora Coral

Goniopora, often called flowerpot coral, is a unique large-polyp stony coral known for its long, flowing polyps. For years it had a reputation for being difficult, but with modern reefing methods and a better understanding of its needs, keepers are having much more consistent success. This particular specimen displays the classic green colouration the species is known for.

In a home reef, Goniopora provides a sense of movement that few other LPS corals can match. Its polyps remain extended during the day, swaying with the current and creating a meadow-like effect. The base of the coral is typically encrusting or branching, but it's the field of green polyps, each tipped with a distinct mouth, that gives the coral its characteristic appearance.

Successful long-term care for Goniopora hinges on a few key requirements. It prefers low to moderate lighting, somewhere in the 75-150 PAR range, and should be placed in the sandbed or lower half of the tank. Flow should be gentle and indirect, just enough to keep the polyps in motion and free of detritus. The most critical factor for Goniopora is feeding. While photosynthetic, they rely heavily on regular feedings of amino acids and specialized coral foods to thrive. Stable water parameters are important, with calcium around 420-440 ppm, alkalinity at 8-9 dKH, and magnesium between 1300-1400 ppm. Though not overly aggressive, their long polyps can sting sensitive corals, so leave a generous amount of space around them.

When given the right conditions, a Goniopora colony can be a rewarding centerpiece in a mixed reef. Its constant, gentle movement offers a beautiful contrast to the more static forms of other corals. It serves as a good reminder that every animal in the reef has its own specific niche and requirements.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
