Description
Description
Euphyllia ancora, commonly known as the Hammer Coral, is a long-standing favorite in the reef aquarium hobby. Its appeal lies in its graceful movement and distinct polyp shape, which adds a unique visual element to any reef tank. The gentle swaying of its tentacles in the current provides a sense of motion that few other corals can replicate, making it a captivating centerpiece.
This species typically forms large colonies with a branching or wall-like skeletal structure. During the day, it extends long, fleshy polyps, each tipped with a characteristic anchor or hammer shape. The coloration is most often a fluorescent green or brown, sometimes with tentacles and tips of contrasting colors. The unique shape and constant movement of these polyps make the Hammer Coral an easily identifiable and popular Large Polyp Stony (LPS) coral.
A dedicated care paragraph is essential for the success of this species. The Green Hammer Coral thrives under moderate lighting conditions, ideally within a PAR range of 75 to 150. It prefers low to moderate, indirect water flow; strong, direct currents can cause the polyps to retract and may lead to tissue damage over time. The best placement is typically on the sandbed or lower rockwork, ensuring it has ample space to expand. While it can derive energy from its symbiotic zooxanthellae, the coral benefits from weekly target feeding of meaty foods like mysis or brine shrimp. Maintain stable water parameters with calcium between 400-450 ppm, alkalinity at 8-12 dKH, and magnesium from 1250-1350 ppm. This coral is aggressive and possesses long sweeper tentacles that can harm neighboring corals, so provide at least six inches of clearance from other species. Acclimate slowly using a drip method to prevent shock.
The Hammer Coral is a rewarding species for aquarists who can provide for its specific needs. Its dynamic presence and beautiful coloration make it a worthwhile addition that brings life and motion to the reef aquarium. For many hobbyists, it represents a classic choice that remains a staple in well-maintained marine environments.

Our Quarantine Procedures
Our Quarantine Procedures
We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.
As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.
Fish
All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.
Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.
During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.
Coral
Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.
Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.
If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed
If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
