Green Turbinaria

Turbinaria corals are a unique group of small-polyp stony corals, often called scroll corals, cup corals, or vase corals for their distinctive growth forms. They are a classic SPS for the home reef, known for being a bit more forgiving than some of their relatives. This specimen has a solid green colouration that is consistent across the colony.

In the wild, Turbinaria colonies grow into broad, thin plates that can scroll in on themselves to create cup or vase-like structures. The surface is dotted with small, evenly spaced corallites. This colony has a characteristic plating form with a vibrant green base tissue and similarly coloured polyps that extend during the day, giving the surface a soft, textured appearance.

A well-maintained reef environment is necessary for any SPS coral to do well. Turbinaria prefers moderate lighting conditions, somewhere in the 150-300 PAR range is a good target. It appreciates moderate, but not overpowering, water flow to keep its surface clear of detritus. Placement in the middle to lower regions of the tank is often ideal, ensuring it has horizontal space to grow without shading corals directly beneath it. Stable water chemistry is important; aim for calcium between 420-440 ppm, alkalinity at 8-9 dKH, and magnesium from 1300-1400 ppm. While it gets most of its energy from light, occasional broadcast feeding with fine particulate foods can be beneficial.

The interesting structure of a scroll coral provides a different kind of architectural element in a reef tank. Its wide, flat surfaces contrast well with the branching forms of Acropora or the mounding shapes of many LPS corals. It can create interesting ledges and shaded areas for other inhabitants as the colony matures.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
