Green/Yellow & Teal Favities Fragment

Favites corals are a classic large-polyp stony (LPS) coral, often called a pineapple or brain coral. They are closely related to Favia and other members of the family Merulinidae, sharing a similar encrusting or massive growth form. In the home aquarium, they bring a steady, predictable growth pattern and a lot of colour to the lower and middle sections of the rockwork. This variety has bright yellow oral discs, a great contrast to the more common green morphs.

This coral grows by encrusting over the rock in a classic LPS fashion, its polyps tightly packed together, forming a solid mass over time. The individual corallites have shared walls, which distinguishes them from the related Favia corals. At night, Favites will extend surprisingly long sweeper tentacles. These are used to both feed and defend its territory, so it's best to give it a bit of room to grow. This particular morph shows a clear yellow colour across its surface.

For best results, provide moderate lighting, in the range of 100-150 PAR. They aren't demanding when it comes to flow, preferring a gentle, indirect current that is just strong enough to keep the surface clean of detritus. We recommend placing them on the rockwork in the lower to middle part of the tank. While photosynthetic, they do benefit from occasional target feeding with meaty coral foods once or twice a week. Maintain stable water parameters, with calcium around 420-440 ppm, alkalinity at 8-9 dKH, and magnesium between 1300-1400. Due to their sweeper tentacles, leave at least a few inches between a Favites and its neighbours to prevent any territorial disputes.

Favites are a great choice for a mixed reef tank that has settled into a stable routine. They are not overly demanding and their slow and steady growth makes them a satisfying coral to keep long-term. They coexist well with other community reef fish and invertebrates that are known to be coral-safe. Their main defensive mechanism is at night, so just be mindful of their placement relative to other corals.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
