Lobo Coral

Lobo Corals, or Lobophyllia, are a favourite large polyp stony coral in the reef aquarium hobby, known for their substantial and fleshy polyps. These corals form large, colonial structures that can become a significant focal point in a mixed reef. This piece measures approximately 6cm. They are often collected from diverse reef environments throughout the Indo-Pacific. While they are a durable coral, their beauty is best realised with careful placement and attention to water quality. A common and enduring LPS, they are excellent for adding bulk and colour to the middle or lower regions of a reef scape.

Lobophyllia feature large, fleshy polyps that can expand considerably, especially when feeding or at night. Their surface can present a wide array of patterns, sometimes with concentric rings or contrasting margins, giving each colony a unique appearance. The oral discs are typically quite prominent. The coral forms large, heavy skeletons as it grows, which can be encrusting or form solid domes, reflecting its robust nature on the reef.

For care, Lobo Corals appreciate moderate lighting, ideally between 75 and 150 PAR. They prefer moderate, indirect water flow to keep their surfaces clean without irritating the polyps. Placement on the sand bed or lower to mid-level rockwork is generally best, ensuring enough room for their fleshy polyps to expand. They are not typically aggressive with long sweeping tentacles, but their large size requires ample spacing from neighbouring corals to prevent physical irritation. While zooxanthellate, supplemental feeding of small meaty foods like mysis shrimp or copepods a few times a week will promote faster growth and better health. Maintain stable water parameters with calcium at 400-440 ppm, alkalinity 8-9 dKH, and magnesium 1300-1400 ppm. Acclimation should be slow, especially with lighting, to allow the coral to adjust to its new environment.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
