Lobophyllia

Lobophyllia, often called Lobo or Brain Coral, are a popular choice in the LPS world for their substantial, fleshy polyps and vibrant appearance. They form solid, heavy colonies, adding a distinct presence to a reef aquarium. This piece measures approximately 6cm. They are excellent candidates for a mixed reef, providing a colourful focal point. Many aquarists appreciate their relatively straightforward care requirements, making them suitable for a range of experience levels. Their growth habit is typically encrusting or massive, forming a beautiful, often undulating, surface. Lobophyllia are known to display a wide range of colours, from bright reds and oranges to more subtle greens and purples, often with contrasting highlights on their valleys and polyps. The polyps themselves are large and fleshy, exhibiting good polyp extension when happy, especially at night when their feeding tentacles emerge. Lobophyllia thrive under moderate lighting, ideally between 75 and 150 PAR. They prefer moderate, indirect water flow to keep their polyps clean without being blasted, which can lead to tissue recession. Placement on the sand bed or lower to mid-level rockwork is generally best. While they possess zooxanthellae for energy, supplemental feeding of small meaty foods like mysis shrimp or copepods a few times a week will promote robust growth and vibrant colouration. Maintaining stable water parameters with calcium at 400-440 ppm, alkalinity at 8-10 dKH, and magnesium at 1300-1400 ppm is crucial. Lobophyllia can be aggressive with sweeper tentacles, so adequate spacing from other corals is important to prevent chemical warfare or direct stinging. When introducing a new specimen, a slow drip acclimation is recommended.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
