Master Scolymia

Scolymia, also known as Doughnut Corals, are a treasured addition to many reef aquariums. Their unique shape and striking patterns make them a focal point, bringing a touch of individuality to the reefscape. This LPS coral is highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts alike for its distinct visual appeal. Master Scolymia are particularly prized for their intricate colouration and patterns. This piece measures approximately 6cm.

Typically, a Scolymia forms a single large polyp that rests directly on the substrate. The fleshy mantle can inflate significantly, often extending over the skeletal base, showcasing a rich tapestry of colours and often featuring concentric patterns or radiating stripes. Their nocturnal feeding response, where small tentacles emerge from the central mouth, is a fascinating display for the observant reef keeper.

Scolymia generally thrive under moderate lighting conditions, ideally around 75-150 PAR. They prefer gentle, indirect water flow to prevent mantle damage and should be placed on a stable surface on the sand bed or lower rockwork. Feeding is important, with meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or small pieces of krill offered a few times a week, ideally after lights out. Maintain stable water parameters: calcium 400-440 ppm, alkalinity 8-10 dKH, and magnesium 1250-1350 ppm. While not overtly aggressive, provide adequate space from other corals as they can extend mesenterial filaments. Acclimation should be slow and steady, allowing the coral to adjust gradually to its new environment.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
