Maze Brain Coral

The Maze Brain Coral, often a Platygyra species, is a classic large polyp stony coral known for its distinctive meandering ridges and valleys. Its surface looks like a labyrinth, giving it the common name. In the wild, these corals form substantial colonies. In a home reef, they bring a unique structure and texture to the aquascape, with colours that can range from earthy greens and browns to more vibrant combinations.

The fleshy polyps of the Maze Brain Coral extend at night to capture food from the water column. During the day, the coral is usually more retracted, showing off its grooved skeleton. The valleys are typically a contrasting colour to the ridges, which creates the maze-like pattern. These corals are generally slow-growing but can encrust over the rockwork over time.

For care, provide moderate lighting, around 100-150 PAR. They are not demanding in terms of flow, preferring gentle to moderate water movement that is strong enough to keep detritus from settling in their channels. Placement is best in the lower to middle regions of the tank on a solid piece of rockwork. While photosynthetic, they benefit from occasional target feeding with meaty foods. As an LPS coral, it has sweeper tentacles that can extend several inches at night, so it's important to leave plenty of space between it and neighbouring corals to avoid chemical warfare. Stable water parameters with calcium around 420-440 ppm, alkalinity at 8-9 dKH, and magnesium at 1300-1400 ppm will support its health and growth.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
