Description
The Hammer Coral is a true classic in the reef aquarium hobby and a cornerstone species of the Euphyllia genus. Its distinctive anchor or hammer-shaped polyp tips have made it a long-time favourite, bringing a unique texture and sense of movement to any reef tank. For many hobbyists, keeping a healthy Hammer Coral is a milestone that marks their success with large polyp stony corals.
During the day, a healthy Hammer Coral expands its polyps, creating a fleshy crown that sways in the current. These corals typically grow in a branching formation, with each head capable of splitting and dividing over time. In terms of colour, Hammer Corals are most often seen in shades of brown or green, usually finished with contrasting cream or lighter-coloured tips that provide a pleasant depth and highlight their unique shape.
For best care, place your Hammer Coral in the lower to middle section of the aquarium where it will receive moderate light, ideally in the 75-150 PAR range. It prefers moderate, indirect water flow that allows the polyps to move gently without being forced back against their sharp skeleton. Like all Euphyllia, Hammer Corals are aggressive and can produce long sweeper tentacles that will sting and damage neighbouring corals. Be sure to provide at least six to eight inches of space on all sides. While photosynthetic, they do appreciate occasional spot-feeding with meaty foods like mysis or specialised LPS pellets. Stable water parameters are important, with calcium around 420-440 ppm, alkalinity at 8-9 dKH, and magnesium between 1300-1400 ppm.
The gentle, rhythmic movement of a Hammer Coral is one of its best features. This constant motion adds a dynamic element that few other corals can replicate, making it an excellent centrepiece in a mixed reef designed around LPS and soft corals. Just be mindful of its neighbours as it grows.

Our Quarantine Procedures
Our Quarantine Procedures
We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.
As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.
Fish
All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.
Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.
During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.
Coral
Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.
Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.
If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed
If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
