Description

The Hammer Coral, Euphyllia ancora, is one of the most iconic and popular Large Polyp Stony (LPS) corals in the reef aquarium hobby. Known for its distinctive hammer-shaped tentacles that gently sway in the current, it adds a mesmerizing sense of movement and life to the aquarium. It is a rewarding coral for aquarists who can provide the stable environment it requires.

The Hammer Coral typically grows in a branching formation, with each branch topped by polyps. These polyps have fleshy tentacles that terminate in a T-shaped, anchor-like tip. This particular variety displays a classic green coloration. The polyps can expand significantly, creating a full and impressive appearance that belies its underlying stony skeleton.

For proper care, Euphyllia ancora requires moderate lighting, with a PAR range of approximately 75-150 being ideal. It prefers low to moderate, indirect water flow that allows its tentacles to sway gently without being forcefully blown around. Placement in the lower to middle regions of the tank on a stable rock is recommended. While largely photosynthetic, it benefits from occasional feedings of mysis shrimp or specialized LPS foods. Maintain stable water parameters with calcium between 400-450 ppm, alkalinity at 8-12 dKH, and magnesium at 1300-1400 ppm. This species is known for its aggressive nature; its sweeper tentacles can extend several inches and will sting nearby corals. It is crucial to provide at least 6 inches of space between it and other inhabitants. Acclimate slowly using a drip method and introduce it to higher light levels gradually.

The dynamic motion and classic shape of the Hammer Coral make it a valuable addition to many reef tanks. Its presence contributes to a dynamic and engaging underwater scene, making it a favorite among experienced hobbyists and those new to keeping LPS corals.

Our Quarantine Procedures

We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.

As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.

Payment & Security

We offer a number of different payment methods, including Credit Card, Afterpay, Q Card, Pay at Collection, Bank Transfer and POLi.
