Description
The Hammer Coral, Fimbriaphyllia ancora, is one of the most popular and recognizable large polyp stony (LPS) corals in the reef aquarium hobby. Its distinctive hammer- or anchor-shaped polyps sway in the current, adding a sense of motion and life to any reef tank. This unique appearance, combined with its general hardiness, makes it a longtime favorite for both new and experienced hobbyists.
This coral is known for its branching skeletal structure from which its fleshy polyps extend. The polyps are tipped with hammer-like shapes, creating a flowing, meadow-like effect. While commonly seen in shades of green and brown, Fimbriaphyllia species can also exhibit more sought-after colorations, including purplish tones. The movement of its polyps is a key reason many aquarists choose to add this species to their collection.
For best results, provide low to moderate lighting, in the range of 75-150 PAR. Hammer corals can be sensitive to overly intense light. Water flow should be gentle to moderate and indirect; strong, direct flow can prevent the polyps from fully extending and may cause tissue damage. Place the coral in the lower to middle section of the aquarium on a stable rock. While photosynthetic, it benefits from occasional target feeding with meaty foods like mysis or brine shrimp. To maintain proper growth, keep calcium between 400-450 ppm, alkalinity between 8-12 dKH, and magnesium between 1250-1350 ppm. Be aware that Hammer Corals have potent sweeper tentacles that can extend several inches at night, so leave at least six inches of space between them and other corals. Acclimate slowly using a drip method to prevent shock.
The Hammer Coral is a classic addition that brings graceful movement and a unique texture to a reef aquarium. Its presence can create a beautiful focal point, and its active appearance offers a different dynamic than more static corals. It is a rewarding species for aquarists who can provide for its needs.

Our Quarantine Procedures
Our Quarantine Procedures
We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.
As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.
Fish
All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.
Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.
During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.
Coral
Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.
Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.
If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed
If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
