Description
Description
Symphyllia are a classic large polyp stony coral, closely related to the Lobophyllia brain corals. They have been a fixture in home aquariums for decades, valued for their fleshy appearance and the potential for intense colour combinations. A healthy Symphyllia adds a unique texture and presence to the lower levels of a reef tank.
These corals form colonies with fused walls and distinct, meandering valleys, giving them their characteristic brain-like look. The tissue is thick and puffy, often obscuring the skeleton beneath. In multi-colour specimens, it's common to see a base colour contrasted with stripes, splotches, or differently coloured oral discs, creating a truly intricate pattern. Under actinic lighting, their fluorescence can be quite pronounced.
For care, Symphyllia do best on the sandbed or a low, flat piece of rockwork. They prefer moderate, indirect water flow—enough to keep their surface clean, but not so much that the tissue is constantly blasted or pulled back. Lighting should also be moderate, in the 100-200 PAR range. Be sure to acclimate them to light slowly to avoid bleaching. They are capable feeders and will readily accept meaty foods like mysis, chopped prawn or pellets a few times a week. Maintain stable alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium levels. They can be aggressive, so leave a good 15cm of space between them and any neighbouring corals to account for sweeper tentacles at night.
Due to their placement on the sandbed, Symphyllia make a great centerpiece coral for the bottom of a tank. Their growth is generally slow and predictable, making them a long-term feature in a well-maintained reef aquarium. They are a good choice for aquarists who have mastered stable water chemistry and are looking for a showpiece LPS coral.

Our Quarantine Procedures
Our Quarantine Procedures
We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.
As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.
Fish
All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.
Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.
During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.
Coral
Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.
Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.
If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed
If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
Payment & Security
We offer a number of different payment methods, including Credit Card, Afterpay, Q Card, Pay at Collection, Bank Transfer and POLi.
Credit card payments are processed securely using the highest possible security protocols.
