Description

Symphyllia is a classic large polyp stony coral, valued for its fleshy, lobed appearance and rich colouration. In the hobby, these corals are often referred to as "brain corals" due to their structure. A well-established Symphyllia colony makes a solid centerpiece for the lower parts of a reef, and individual specimens can show a remarkable range of colours at once.

This coral grows in a colonial form, with the large polyps fused together into meandering walls and valleys. The flesh can inflate substantially, giving the coral a full and pillowy look. On a multi-colour specimen, colours often appear as distinct stripes, splashes, or patches across the surface, sometimes with a contrasting colour in the centres or mouths of the polyps. This gives the coral a very dynamic and textured appearance under aquarium lighting.

For care, Symphyllia should be placed on the sandbed or a flat ledge in the lower third of the tank. They prefer low to moderate, indirect water flow, just enough to keep the surface clear of detritus without causing the tissue to pull back. Lighting should be in the moderate range, from 100 to 200 PAR, as intense light can cause bleaching. While photosynthetic, they respond very well to target feeding once or twice a week with small, meaty foods. Keep an eye on its sweeper tentacles, which can extend several inches at night, and provide ample space between it and other corals. Stable water parameters with calcium at 420-450 ppm and alkalinity at 8-10 dKH are essential for long-term health.

In a home reef, the Symphyllia is a rewarding coral to keep. Its relatively slow growth rate makes it manageable, and its placement on the sandbed adds a vibrant splash of colour to an area of the tank that can sometimes be overlooked. It.

Our Quarantine Procedures

We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.

As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.

Payment & Security

We offer a number of different payment methods, including Credit Card, Afterpay, Q Card, Pay at Collection, Bank Transfer and POLi.

Credit card payments are processed securely using the highest possible security protocols.
