Description

Chalice corals are a diverse and popular group of LPS corals known for their distinctive plating or encrusting growth forms. Aquarists appreciate them for the unique textures and vibrant colors they bring to a reef aquarium, often filling in lower-light areas of the rockwork. Their semi-aggressive nature requires careful planning regarding placement, but their appearance makes them a sought-after addition for many hobbyists.

This group of corals typically grows in a thin, plate-like fashion, encrusting over rock and spreading outwards. The surface can display a range of textures, from relatively smooth to bumpy, and often features raised corallites, sometimes called "eyes," which can be a contrasting color to the main body of the coral. While Chalice corals are found in a wide spectrum of colors, orange varieties provide a particularly striking and warm splash of color on the reef.

For best results, a Chalice coral should be placed in the lower to middle section of the aquarium where it will receive low to moderate lighting, generally in the 75-150 PAR range. They prefer low to moderate water flow; strong, direct currents can irritate the flesh and inhibit expansion. Chalice corals are known to be aggressive and can extend long sweeper tentacles at night that can sting neighboring corals. It is crucial to provide several inches of space between them and other sessile invertebrates. While they are photosynthetic, they show a strong feeding response and benefit from target feeding small, meaty foods like mysis shrimp or specialized coral diets a couple of times per week. Maintain stable water parameters with calcium between 400-450 ppm, alkalinity at 8-12 dKH, and magnesium from 1250-1350 ppm. Always acclimate new corals slowly to your tank's conditions.

A Chalice coral is an excellent choice for adding a different growth structure and vibrant color to the lower landscape of a mixed reef tank. Their plating form contrasts well with branching SPS or massive boulder corals, making them a wonderful specimen for the reef keeper who can provide them with the space they require.

Our Quarantine Procedures

We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.

As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.

We offer a number of different payment methods, including Credit Card, Afterpay, Q Card, Pay at Collection, Bank Transfer and POLi.
