Lobophyllia, often known as “Lobos,” are hardy and visually impressive LPS corals prized for their thick fleshy lobes and vibrant colour patterns. They thrive in stable, mature reef systems and are well suited for both beginner and experienced hobbyists. These corals prefer low to moderate flow that allows their tissue to expand comfortably without being pushed or irritated. Lighting should remain in the low to moderate range as intense light can cause colour loss or bleaching, while balanced, softer lighting brings out their natural richness and depth of colour.
Placement is typically on the sand bed or a stable, flat rock where the coral has room to inflate fully and extend its feeding tentacles during the evening. Like many LPS, Lobophyllia benefit from occasional feeding of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, reef pellets, or small marine chunks, which can support growth and help maintain vibrant colouring. They are generally peaceful but should be given space from more aggressive corals, as their fleshy tissue can be sensitive to stings.
Maintaining consistent water parameters is key to long-term success. Aim for alkalinity around 8–9 dKH, calcium between 420–450 ppm, and magnesium near 1300–1400 ppm. Nitrate and phosphate should remain detectable but stable, avoiding large fluctuations. With the right environment, Lobophyllia adapt well and become a standout feature in any reef aquarium, offering movement, texture, and stunning colour variation.
