Description

Lobophyllia are a classic large-polyp stony coral, often called a Lobo or Brain Coral. They've been a staple in the hobby for years for good reason. These corals form large, fleshy mounds with distinct lobes or valleys, creating a classic brain-like topography on the sandbed of a home reef. This particular specimen presents a deep and consistent orange colouration.

During the day, the polyps of a Lobophyllia inflate with water, giving the colony a full, fleshy appearance that covers its underlying skeleton. The surface texture is often smooth or slightly bumpy, with the orange colouration remaining uniform across the tissue. At night, it may extend short feeding tentacles from its mouths, which are located in the centre of each lobe. The coral's tissue will retract if it is stressed or disturbed.

For care, Lobophyllia corals prefer low to moderate lighting, in the 75 to 150 PAR range, making them ideal for the sandbed or a low-lying rock. Strong, direct light can cause bleaching. They require low to moderate indirect water flow—just enough to keep detritus from settling on their surface without causing the tissue to pull back. While photosynthetic, they benefit from target feeding once or twice a week with meaty foods like mysis shrimp or chopped seafood. Keep calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium levels stable. A key consideration is their aggression; they can extend potent sweeper tentacles at night, so give them ample space from neighbouring corals.

Lobos are relatively slow-growing, which makes them a predictable and manageable centerpiece for an LPS-focused aquarium. Their defined shape allows for intentional placement, and they won't rapidly encrust over surrounding rockwork. Given their peaceful daytime appearance but nocturnal aggression, they are best placed on a sandbed island where they have room to grow without immediate neighbours.

Our Quarantine Procedures

We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.

As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.

Payment & Security

We offer a number of different payment methods, including Credit Card, Afterpay, Q Card, Pay at Collection, Bank Transfer and POLi.

Credit card payments are processed securely using the highest possible security protocols.
