Orange Lobophyllia

Lobophyllia, often called Lobo or Brain Coral, is a classic LPS coral that brings a lot of character and colour to a reef aquarium. They are generally robust and can be a rewarding addition for both new and experienced reef keepers. This particular specimen is a vibrant orange, making it a striking focal point. This piece measures approximately 12cm across.

This coral grows into a solid, heavy colony with fleshy polyps that inflate considerably. When fully extended, the orange tissue creates a substantial, rounded form, often obscuring the underlying skeleton. The coral will extend its feeding tentacles at night, and sometimes during the day if it senses food in the water column.

Lobophyllia thrive under moderate lighting, with PAR values around 80-150. They appreciate moderate, indirect water flow that allows their polyps to inflate fully without being blasted directly. Place them on the sand bed or securely on lower rockwork, ensuring there is ample space around them as they can be aggressive towards neighbouring corals, especially at night when their sweepers extend. They will benefit from regular feeding of finely minced meaty foods like mysis shrimp or copepods. Maintain stable water parameters: calcium 400-440 ppm, alkalinity 8-10 dKH, and magnesium 1250-1350 ppm. When introducing a new Lobophyllia, a gradual acclimation to your tank's lighting and flow is always recommended.

An orange Lobophyllia like this can add a fantastic pop of colour and a substantial, attractive form to the foreground or mid-ground of a mixed reef display, contrasting well with other coral textures and hues.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
