Orange Plate Coral

Orange Plate Corals are popular LPS corals often seen settled on the sandbed. Their unique free-living nature and vibrant colouration make them an interesting addition to a reef aquarium. They are generally hardy and can be a good choice for those looking for something a bit different from typical encrusting or branching corals. This piece measures approximately 7cm. Their disk-like structure makes them a focal point, especially when extended. They get their common name from their flat, plate-like shape. Some specimens can become quite round or dome-shaped as they mature. Plate corals will generally extend numerous short, often textured tentacles at night to capture food, but they can sometimes be seen with tentacles out during the day, particularly when feeding. The entire coral will display a vibrant orange hue. Plate corals thrive under moderate lighting, ideally around 100-200 PAR, and prefer moderate, indirect water flow to keep detritus from settling without irritating the fleshy coral. They are best placed on the sandbed or a very flat, stable surface where they cannot be easily dislodged. Feeding is important for these corals; they will readily accept small meaty foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or specialized coral foods, especially when offered at night. Maintain stable water parameters: calcium between 400-440 ppm, alkalinity 8-10 dKH, and magnesium 1250-1350 ppm. Plate corals are not typically aggressive, but their fleshy nature means they need space to fully expand without touching other corals. Acclimation should be slow and gradual, particularly for lighting and flow, to allow the coral to adjust to its new environment. These corals bring a lovely splash of movement and a unique form to the lower reaches of the reef aquarium, providing a distinct contrast to taller coral structures.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
