Orange Sun Coral

Sun Corals are a unique and rewarding group of non-photosynthetic corals, prized for their incredibly bright coloration that is not dependent on aquarium lighting. Unlike the vast majority of corals kept in the hobby, Tubastraea species derive all of their energy from capturing food particles from the water column. This makes them a fascinating addition for aquarists looking to add life and color to lower-light areas of their reef tank and who enjoy a more interactive feeding regimen.

The Orange Sun Coral displays a brilliant, deep orange that is consistent across the entire colony. It grows in a distinctive clump-like formation, with individual polyps emerging from a shared skeletal base. The polyps themselves are large and fleshy, resembling a small sea anemone when fully extended. During the day or when resting, the polyps remain retracted, but they will open wide when stimulated by the presence of food, creating a dramatic and beautiful display of color and movement.

Caring for Sun Corals revolves around consistent feeding. Because they are non-photosynthetic, they require very low light (0-50 PAR) and should be placed in shaded areas or overhangs to prevent nuisance algae from growing on their skeleton. They prefer moderate to strong, intermittent water flow to help keep their surfaces clean and carry food. Target feeding each polyp with meaty foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or specialized coral food 3-5 times per week is essential for their health. Maintain stable water parameters with Calcium at 400-450 ppm, Alkalinity at 8-12 dKH, and Magnesium at 1250-1350 ppm. They are peaceful and have no sweeper tentacles, but require space so they are not overgrown by other corals.

For the dedicated hobbyist, the Orange Sun Coral is an exceptionally rewarding species. While its care requirements differ from photosynthetic corals, the routine of feeding and watching the polyps open is a highlight for many aquarists. Their intense orange coloration provides a splash of color in places where other corals might not thrive, making them a valuable and interesting addition to a well-maintained reef aquarium.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
