Description
Description
Pectinia corals, often called lettuce corals, are a unique LPS species known for their distinctive skeletal structure. Their unusual growth pattern, forming thin and highly irregular plates and spires, sets them apart from the more common stony corals found in the hobby. It's a coral that brings a very different texture to a reef aquarium.
In the wild, Pectinia forms delicate, whorled colonies. In a home reef, it grows out into convoluted, sharp-edged plates that can be quite fragile. The tissue covering the skeleton is thin, and its polyps are generally only extended at night. The colour is typically in the range of greenish-brown to grey, though some specimens may develop hints of other colours on the ridges or in the valleys of the colony.
Successful care for Pectinia involves providing low to moderate lighting, somewhere in the 75-150 PAR range. They do not appreciate being under intense, direct light. Water flow should be gentle and indirect to prevent tissue damage on its sharp plate-like structure. While it gains much of its energy from photosynthesis, it benefits from occasional spot feeding with small meaty foods after the lights are out. Maintain stable water parameters, including calcium between 420-440 ppm and alkalinity between 8-9 dKH.
One of the most important aspects of keeping Pectinia is managing its aggression. It is known for producing long, powerful sweeper tentacles at night that can damage or kill other corals they touch. It must be given a wide berth, with several inches of space separating it from any neighbors. This makes it a good specimen for a dedicated spot on the sand bed or a low-lying rock where it has room to itself.
This is a WYSIWYG item, so you'll receive the exact specimen pictured.
Our Quarantine Procedures
Our Quarantine Procedures
We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.
As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.
Fish
All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.
Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.
During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.
Coral
Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.
Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.
If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed
If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
Payment & Security
We offer a number of different payment methods, including Credit Card, Afterpay, Q Card, Pay at Collection, Bank Transfer and POLi.
Credit card payments are processed securely using the highest possible security protocols.
