Description
Lobophyllia corals are a longstanding favourite in the reef aquarium hobby, often referred to simply as Lobo or Brain Corals. As a large-polyp stony (LPS) coral, they are known for their large, fleshy polyps that inflate throughout the day. This particular specimen displays a classic combination of purple tissue with lighter pink oral discs at the centre of each polyp.
The colony grows in a distinctive mounding formation, with the skeleton forming deep, meandering valleys across the surface. When the polyps are fully expanded, these skeletal structures are almost completely hidden by the soft, pillow-like tissue. This expansion and contraction is a normal daily cycle. At night, Lobophyllia may extend short sweeper tentacles from its perimeter to catch food or defend its territory.
For best care, place your Lobophyllia on the sandbed or a low, flat rock in an area of low to moderate water flow. The polyps should be gently swaying, not blasted with direct current. It prefers lower light levels, thriving in a PAR range of 75-150. While photosynthetic, it feeds actively and will appreciate a weekly offering of mysis shrimp or other small, meaty foods. Keep in mind its sweeper tentacles can pack a punch, so leave a few inches of space between it and any neighbouring corals. Standard reef parameters with stable alkalinity (8-9 dKH), calcium (420-440 ppm), and magnesium (1300-1400 ppm) will support its health and growth.
Lobophyllia is a good citizen in most reef tanks, particularly those focused on LPS or mixed systems. Its slow growth rate and predictable shape make it easy to place long-term. It provides excellent colour and texture for the lower regions of the aquascape, where light is less intense and flow is more gentle.

Our Quarantine Procedures
Our Quarantine Procedures
We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.
As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.
Fish
All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.
Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.
During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.
Coral
Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.
Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.
If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed
If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
Payment & Security
We offer a number of different payment methods, including Credit Card, Afterpay, Q Card, Pay at Collection, Bank Transfer and POLi.
Credit card payments are processed securely using the highest possible security protocols.
