Description
Description
Cyphastrea is an encrusting small-polyp stony (SPS) coral that has become popular in the reef aquarium hobby for its unique color combinations and patterns. It is appreciated for its tolerance of lower light conditions compared to many other SPS species, making it a versatile choice for adding color and texture to various areas of a reef tank. Its steady growth can quickly cover bare rockwork with a bumpy, colorful surface.
The appearance of this Cyphastrea is defined by its encrusting growth form, which follows the contours of the rock it is placed on. The surface is covered in small, distinct corallites that house the coral's polyps. This particular color variation typically displays a rich purple base color. The polyps themselves are often a contrasting bright gold or yellow, creating an eye-catching pattern across the entire colony. The polyps may extend during the day but are most active at night.
For care, Cyphastrea prefers lower to moderate lighting, with a PAR range of 75-150 being sufficient. It should be placed on the sandbed or lower to middle rockwork, out of direct, high-intensity light. Water flow should be moderate and indirect, as strong, direct currents can inhibit polyp extension and feeding. This coral is an active feeder and will benefit from regular broadcast feedings of small foods like frozen mysis shrimp, copepods, or specialized LPS and SPS coral foods, especially after the lights are out. Maintain stable water parameters, including Calcium between 400-450 ppm, Alkalinity at 8-12 dKH, and Magnesium at 1300-1450 ppm. While generally peaceful, it possesses short sweeper tentacles, so it's best to provide a few inches of space from neighboring corals to prevent stinging as it grows.
Cyphastrea is a worthwhile addition for both new and experienced reef keepers looking to add an encrusting SPS coral to their system. Its ability to thrive in less intense light makes it a great option for filling in lower portions of the aquascape that might otherwise be left bare. The unique texture and striking color contrast it provides can bring a different dimension to the reef.

Our Quarantine Procedures
Our Quarantine Procedures
We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.
As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.
Fish
All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.
Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.
During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.
Coral
Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.
Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.
If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed
If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
