Purple Gold Millepora

Millepora, commonly known in the hobby as Fire Coral, is a fast-growing and visually distinct addition to an established reef aquarium. While technically a type of hydrocoral, its care requirements and calcium carbonate skeleton lead to it being classified as an SPS coral by hobbyists. Its rapid growth can quickly create impressive structures, adding texture and dimension to the rockwork. Handle with care, as its common name comes from the potent sting it can deliver to unprotected skin.

This variety of Millepora typically displays a striking color combination, with a deep purple base coloration that is contrasted by bright, golden-yellow polyps. The polyps are fine and numerous, giving the coral a fuzzy or hairy appearance when they are fully extended. Depending on flow and lighting conditions, Millepora can grow in a branching, plating, or encrusting fashion, often exhibiting a combination of forms.

For best results, Millepora requires care similar to other high-light SPS corals. It thrives under intense lighting, ideally in the 250-450 PAR range. Water flow should be high and turbulent to keep the coral clean and deliver nutrients. Ideal placement is in the upper third of the aquarium where it can receive adequate light and flow. While primarily photosynthetic, it will consume fine particulate matter and can benefit from broadcast feeding of phytoplankton or SPS coral foods. Maintain stable water parameters with Calcium at 400-450 ppm, Alkalinity at 8-12 dKH, and Magnesium at 1300-1450 ppm. Due to its potent sting, it is highly aggressive and must be given plenty of space from all other corals. Always wear gloves when handling.

For the reefer with a stable SPS system, Millepora is an excellent choice. Its rapid growth rate is a rewarding sign of good water quality, and its unique appearance offers a texture and form not found in many other common corals. It is a classic reef aquarium species that brings vibrant color and dynamic structure to the aquascape.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
