Purple & Green Candycane

The Candycane Coral, Caulastrea furcata, is one of the classic large-polyp stony corals in the reef-keeping hobby. It has long been a favourite for its steady growth and distinct appearance. This variety shows off a rich colour combination, with bright green oral discs set against a deep purple base, making it a colourful addition to any mixed reef.

Each polyp of the Candycane Coral sits atop a branching, skeletal base that grows outward and upward over time. During the day, and especially when it senses food in the water, the polyps swell with water, becoming plump and fleshy. The contrast between the vibrant green centres and the purple tissue below is what gives this morph its character. At night, you may see its short feeder tentacles extended.

For best health, Candycane corals prefer low to moderate lighting, somewhere in the 75 to 150 PAR range. They do well on the sandbed or on lower rockwork, out of the most intense light. Water flow should be gentle and indirect, just enough to keep the polyps free of detritus without battering them. While photosynthetic, they are eager eaters and will grow much faster with regular target feeding of mysis, brine shrimp, or small pellet foods. Maintain stable water parameters with calcium around 420-440 ppm, alkalinity at 8-9 dKH, and magnesium at 1300-1400. They are generally peaceful but should be given a few inches of space from neighbouring corals.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
