Description

Goniastrea corals, sometimes referred to as a small wall coral or maze brain, are a popular choice for reef hobbyists looking to add unique texture and structure to their aquarium. This encrusting LPS coral grows by developing new polyps that share walls, creating an intricate, labyrinth-like pattern across the rockwork. Its steady growth and manageable care requirements make it an appealing choice for both new and experienced reef keepers.

The appearance of Goniastrea is defined by its tightly packed, polygonal corallites. These corals come in a wide range of color combinations, most commonly seen in shades of green, brown, red, and purple, often with the oral disc being a different color from the surrounding polyp wall. As it expands, it will gradually cover the surface it is placed on, following the contours of the rock and creating a living, textured landscape.

For best care, Goniastrea should be placed in the lower to middle third of the aquarium where it will receive low to moderate lighting, ideally in the 75-150 PAR range. It prefers moderate, indirect water flow which is strong enough to keep detritus from settling on its surface but not so strong that it prevents the polyps from extending. While photosynthetic, the coral benefits from occasional target feeding of small, meaty foods like mysis shrimp or specialized LPS pellets. Maintain stable water parameters with calcium between 400-450 ppm, alkalinity at 8-12 dKH, and magnesium from 1300-1400 ppm. This coral is semi-aggressive and has short sweeper tentacles, so be sure to provide at least a few inches of space from its neighbors. As with all new additions, a slow drip acclimation is recommended.

Overall, a Goniastrea is a worthwhile addition for its interesting growth form and the detailed texture it brings to a reef tank. It is a hardy coral that rewards the patient aquarist with a beautiful, encrusted centerpiece over time, without being overly demanding in its care needs.

Our Quarantine Procedures

We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.

As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.

We offer a number of different payment methods, including Credit Card, Afterpay, Q Card, Pay at Collection, Bank Transfer and POLi.
