Description
Description
Montipora danae is an encrusting small polyp stony (SPS) coral that belongs to the diverse Montipora genus. It is a popular choice for reef aquarists looking to add texture and interesting color combinations to their rockwork. Its growth pattern allows it to cover surfaces, creating a living topography that can become a foundational piece of a mature reef aquarium ecosystem.
This species is characterized by its bumpy or nodular surface, formed by raised structures called verrucae from which the polyps extend. This particular variety of Montipora danae typically displays a rich purple base coloration that contrasts with its bright green polyps. This color combination remains quite popular in the hobby. The coral grows by encrusting over the rock, conforming to its shape and eventually forming a thick plate.
For care, Montipora danae requires conditions typical for most SPS corals. It thrives under moderate to high lighting, with a PAR range of 250-400 being suitable. Water flow should be moderate to strong and irregular to keep the surface clear of detritus and deliver nutrients. Place it on a secure piece of rockwork in the middle to upper part of the tank where it has room to expand. While photosynthetic, it benefits from broadcast feeding with microplankton or specialized SPS foods. Maintain stable water parameters, including calcium at 400-450 ppm, alkalinity at 8-12 dKH, and magnesium at 1250-1350 ppm. This coral is generally peaceful, but it will encrust over its neighbors, so provide adequate space. Proper drip acclimation is recommended to prevent shock.
Montipora danae is a rewarding species for the intermediate aquarist and a classic for any high-energy reef tank. Its textured appearance and engaging color scheme provide a different kind of appeal than branching or plating corals, making it a valuable addition for adding diversity and layered growth to the aquascape.

Our Quarantine Procedures
Our Quarantine Procedures
We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.
As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.
Fish
All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.
Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.
During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.
Coral
Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.
Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.
If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed
If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
